Pomona (Was a Goddess)

Pomona was a goddess  who only thought of trees She sang among the flowers tended by the bees She was such a pretty nymph standing in the heat A tiny patch of daisies growing near her feet Pomona was a beauty and many sought her hand Many suitors came then trod upon her land Stubborn as a chill wind turned them all away And warned them not to return another day

Vertumnus was a young man walking by the trees Saw Pomona’s beauty and fell upon his knees Vertumnus was a clever man he disguised himself As an older lady and talked about himself He spoke of the fruit trees how beautiful they were And said many other pretty things to her He told her of a young man Vertumnus was his name Such a handsome fellow of beauty and of fame

Pomona heard it all her eyes set like flint Through all his tall tales remained unconvinced Vertumnus was so desparate he took off his clothes And pleaded with Pomona to be the one she chose
